Psammoryctides moravicus

(Hrabe, 1934)

Description
Large smooth, pink worms. Anterior dorsal bundles with hair and pectinate chaetae. Hair chaetae very finely pilose, anteriorly 1-5 per bundle, posteriorly disappearing already before midbody. Anterior pectinate chaetae (2-3 per bundle) with equal ordinary teeth and with as long, or shorter intermediate teeth. Anterior ventral chaetae 2-4 per bundle. Posterior crotchets very thick both in dorsal and ventral bundles, with enlarged, bent lower tooth. In mature individuals, ventral chaetae absent from XI. Spermathecal chaetae in X thin, straight and stick-shaped but with furrow on their distal part, 193-215 µm long. Length 20-30 mm, segment number 80-95. Dorsal chaetae, both hair and pectinate chaetae, have an intermediate appearance between Psammoryctides barbatus and Psammoryctides albicola. Hindbody can look similar in all three species.
Burrowing in sediment.

Distribution
Europe.

Ecology
In freshwater, mostly in rivers.


Reproduction
Sexual only. Eggs laid in cocoons.
