Subfamilia Naidinae

Type genus Nais Müller, 1774, as for the Family Naididae. Erected as a subfamily by Lastockin, 1921, for all genera of Naididae except Chaetogaster and Pristina sensu lato. Nemec and Brinkhurst, 1981 treated it including the tribes Naidini, Derini, Pristinini and Chaetogastrini but excluding a group of genera united under another subfamily, Stylariinae.

Description
Naididae with various external characters but sharing lack of prostate tissue on atria.

Distribution
Cosmopolitan.

Ecology
In freshwater. Feeding mainly on detritus and unicellular algae; few predatory and parasitic species present.

Reproduction
Mostly asexual, by paratomy (budding). Four, five or seven anterior segments developing in the budding zone. Maturing and sexual reproduction rare or seasonal.
